How does Outliers connect to MY life?

Outlier: something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body. The book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell has connect to my life in many ways. I have learned a lot from this book and it really opened my eyes up to see what I've never saw before. "The story of success is more complex-and a lot more interesting-than it initially appears" is a great quote from the inside cover of the book because at first I'm not going to lie I thought it was boring but as I read more and more into it I realized how interesting this stuff really was.

A part of the book Outliers that related to my life was in chapter 2, The 10,000-Hour Rule. "The question is this: is there such thing as innate talent?" (page 38) I agree with the book that yes there is such thing as innate talent, but also if I want to be successful I must prepare.  For example, not only am I lucky that I have a talent for basketball, but if I really wanted to achieve a goal to play basketball in college I have to prepare.  This would include summer camps, extra basketball practice and lessons.  "Achievement is talent plus preparation." (page 38)  It seems like if we want to be good at something or even excellent at it, it takes time to achieve our goals.  It's not something that happens overnight.  For example in the book it talks about being a chess master, this takes ten years.  Success is a journey.  Some people are lucky because in the this chapter it also talks about accidents of time, and place and birth.  This means something like you being at the right place at the right time.  Success may also have to do with luck.  I believe you still need a skill, but a lucky break can make things easier.

The next chapter that I thought I could relate to was Chapter 4, The trouble with Geniuses, Part 2.  The one quote which I think is so true is "It's the culture that you find yourself in that determines that." (page 110).  This means that it you are in lower economic group you will not be as well know as someone is a wealthier bracket.  When you have less money, you have to work harder to climb that mountain of success.  I am lucky because my family is upper middle class.  I have a lot of support from my immediate family and extended family.  For example if I became a professional woman basketball player, I think that my name would be fairly well know, unlike maybe another woman basketball player that came from Arbor Hill.  Our society shapes our successes and we need our family and friends to support us.  In this chapter Chris Langan has an uphill battle to become successful.  He is very smart, but his family is very poor.  He also doesn't have any support.  Chris has to do everything by himself.  That is so hard to do.  "These were things that others, with lesser minds, could master easily.  But that's because those others had had help along the way, and Chris Langan never had.  It wasn't an excuse.  It was a fact.  He had to make his way alone, and no one - not rock stars, not professional athletes, not software billionaires, and not even geniuses - ever makes it alone." (page 115)  Our community, our culture, the way we are brought up is very important in shaping our lives.  I am on the right track because of my culture and community. I will hopefully continue on the right track.

Chapter 7, The Ethnic Theory of Plane Crashes.  This chapter is talking about how our culture determines what kind of person we are or how we handle ourselves and superiors.  Most Americans think of themselves as equal.  We are not afraid to talk to our bosses or superiors.  We feel in most circumstances each person is approachable.  The Korean Air lines were suffering from many plane crashes.  "The issue of  Korean Air is not a matter of individual company but a matter of the whole country, " he said. (the Korean President was speaking) "Our countries creditiblity is at stake."(page 182)  We are fortunate to be Americans because we feel a sense of loyalty to our country and our freedom.  We never feel like our creditiblity is at stake.  I am so happy that I am an American.  I enjoy my freedom, but also have morals and values.  The Koreans have morals and values to but subordinates are always listen to or respected.  For instance a Korean co-pilot would not be respected as highly as the Captain of the plane.  The have a social class in Korea and it continues in their jobs.  So if the Captain of the plane made a  bad judgment call, the co pilot would not feel it was his place to speak up before the plane crash to prevent the accident.  "Why is the fact that each of us comes from a culture with it's own distinctive mix of strengths and weaknesses, tendencies and predispositions,  so difficult to acknowledge? Who we are cannot be separated from where we are from- and when we ignore that fact, planes crash." (page 221)  I can relate to this chapter because if my basketball coach calls me out for something and I don't agree, that I do feel comfortable in telling him I don't agree.  My basketball coach respects me and I respect him.  But I would not allow my plane to crash with out speaking up.

In conclusion this book was very eye opening.  I felt like some part of my life are connected to Malcolm Gladwell's philosophy/conclusions.  I look forward to my adventure, my life and how my culture, community, home life, helps shapes my future.  I am a firm believer that I can I be successful.  Attitude with preparation, I am hoping will get me to the career I want to pursue.  I am blessed with many things in my life I am hoping that I will also have some luck along the way.  Life is full of many ups and downs, but will my story be another statistic, that upper middles class people have a better chance of not quitting and achieving our goals.

Shoe Poetry Prompt

Day in the life of a girl basketball player.
As if the sound of your alarm clock going off isn't already annoying enough, waking up to your mom yelling for you to pack all of your basketball stuff up isn't any easier.
The day in the life of a Hooper is stressful but chill.
Stressful in the way of getting all of your homework done actually in school so you can just go to practice and then come home to go straight to bed and chill as in wearing sweatpants or a north face every day seems like your only options.
Practice always is the top priority.
School is over time for some "ROCK" loving.
Shorts on, practice jersey on. Lacing up the old adias'.
The day in the life of a basketball player may seem fun but its always the same.
Eat, sleep, homework, hoop.
But in the end, winning a game is the best feeling a girl can ever have.

Microfiction: It had to be done

Dear You.
I'm a freshmen and I have feelings. I have no idea how to control them. I am so insecure that I thought I needed you. I craved the attention. I noticed that you've changed, I've noticed things are no longer the same. You aren't the same person I met a year ago. You aren't the same person I told all of my secrets to. As I look at you, your a whole different person. As I walked down the hallway everybody stopping and starring at me, looking like something was completely wrong with me, looking as if I no longer needed to live. You think what you did was good? How was that a positive outcome? I know it was partially my fault as it was yours but you told everyone, everything. I talked to you the day before and you seemed like you actually cared about my well being. My mom was right I never should have talked to you or became friends with you or anything more than that. I don't think you know how much my life as suffered from this. I have lost friends and lost people that I thought would have been in my life forever. People call me names but I am strong enough to get over that, but what I can't get over is seeing your face. You just look at me, like seriously, you think your better than me. Well your not. Your just some boy I will hopefully never see again in my life. I have a best friend now that cares about me and she has told me people like you need to stay out of my life. So I'm cleaning out the neigitve with the positive. I'm doing what I need to do. It had to be done.
From Me.

"TU TUESDAY"

http://www.timesunion.com/opinion/article/Editorial-Food-for-thought-2342523.php

The authors point of view I believe is that instead of giving the food pantry unhealthy foods we should be giving them healthy food like fruits and veggies.
"So why can't food stamps include subsidies for the purchase of healthy foods, rather than those so high in sugar (corn) and fats (soy)?" was asked. I think the reasoning for this is because America is obese therefore maybe if we cut down on the unhealthy food, more people would live a longer life. "State efforts, like allocating $20 million a year to encourage food stamp recipients to patronize farmers markets, should be increased as well." was also stated. I think the author also wants to get the point across that our government should be doing more on this situation. Overall I agree with the authors point on how we should start taking action in making American more healthy.

K= Kai Ken

Breed Description - The Kai is a relatively healthy, athletic, and sturdy breed. Their life span is anywhere from 12 to 15+ years.
Appearance/Size -The Kai Ken is a medium sized dog with a wedge shaped head and pointy ears. Males are typically 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder, while the females are slightly smaller, 17 to 20 inches at the shoulder. The tail may be curled over the back, or carried in a sickle position. Limbs should be strong and should be well developed reflecting the dogs’ history of mountain life. The coat is of harsh texture, medium length, and comes in various shades of brindle (tiger stripes).
Diet -  Meat may be fed cooked or raw. (While many holistic veterinarians recommend feeding raw meat, there are potential risks to your companion animal’s health from bacterially contaminated meat. Please discuss this issue with your veterinarian before feeding raw meat.) If feeding raw, it is recommended that meat be frozen for 72 hours at -4 degrees F prior to use. Most meats can be refrozen one time safely, so once you mix the meal, it can be put back in the freezer until thawed for feeding. Always follow standard safe meat handling procedures.
Temperament -The Kai Ken is intelligent, agile, alert and brave. They are naturally hunters and make good guard dogs, being reserved with strangers but loyal to their families. They are friendly, often good with children and are not usually aggressive towards other dogs. Many love to swim, and have been known to cross rivers and climb trees while chasing their prey
Shedding -  If you have Kai Ken puppies or digs, then remember to brush or comb their coat occasionally. Also, remember to remove the knots or mats in the soft undercoat, especially if your dog has been gamboling in the woods or in a field. You must bathe your dog occasionally. Kai Kens are energetic dogs, so do take them out for long walks or a run, or indulge them with a play session. They also enjoy all sorts of physical and mental activities.
Health/Allergies/Vaccines – They did their vaccinations when they are born so they don't get sick. The hair type dogs are the ones best for dog allergy sufferers, the double coated ones pontetially being the worse due to the extreme amounts of tumbleweeds they can produce. Though with enough cleaning a house with a single or double coated dog could keep allergy visitors from suffering too much.

Write a poem about a very small object.

Small object: One of my headphones

Tiny, little, small
what I would do without you
your the one thing that can clear my mind
you break so much, I have to be careful
your fragile
but yet strong
I can always listen to you
The words you sing to me are powerful
Your pink and pretty
You have a left and a right,
you join together to make me hear you
I need you
You get smaller and small
but yet still remain the best
Yours words are clear and that all I can ask for

TU Tuesday Guest Speaker.

Kristi Gustafson Barlette

Poise: I think Kristi was very comfortable during her presentation/speech because she made great eye contact with all of us and was a very interesting person to listen to. When Mrs. Barlette swore by accident in front of our class I thought she handled it very well. I know that can be embarrassing but by the way she was sincere about apologizing, I thought that showed a lot of character.
Clarity: I thought by having someone from the Times Union come talk to us as a class that there might be some big words used and maybe I wouldn't understand everything they said, lucky this wasn't the situation. While Kristi was talking I thought her vocabulary was very unique in the way that she never used the same adjective more then once and really made connections to our class. I think she did a great way of clarifying what she said and she really talked in a 10th grade understanding.
Volume: I thought her volume was perfect. Kristi always made sure she was clear on what she was saying and also said everything in way we could all understand. Kristi's volume was great, she was never too loud or too quiet.
Information: The biggest information or suggestion I got out of Kristi's speech was when she was saying how she never thought she would get a job working at the Times Union and now she has proved everyone wrong. I think her information was very useful because, I really got inspired when she was talking about you how you shouldn't give up on something you want to do or something you love. I learned a lot from her past experiences and her mistakes and hopefully one day I'll be able to use those experiences to my advantage
Organization: I think the organization was good but not great. Sometimes she went off on a tangent, but other than that she answered everyone's questions honestly and thoroughly. I believe when she was talking everyone could put themselves in her shoes and feel how she felt when she was going through everything. Kristi's organization was good in a way it kept focus for the most part.

My Role: I think my role wasn't the best because I didn't talk or ask questions. I am the type of person in an audience I'd rather listen then talk because I didn't feel I could add anything at a specific time to the conversation and also almost all of my questions were asked. I think listening is also really important because you learn more by soaking in the information.

Did I like the speaker?
I thought overall Kristi was a very good speaker, she was interesting and funny. I would recommend her to come next year because I learned a lot and hopefully everyone else did. I thought the conversation was very good and overall every seemed to enjoy it.

Opinion Prompt #2. Child testimonies in abuse cases are not credible.

I disagree with this statement because I believe that children are the most important part of the testimonies. If you have a sexual or physical abuse case dealing with a child, the only way to know what happened is through that child. Say a child was getting hit by a parent, you would only take the story from the parent and not the child at all? The kid is who your suppose to be protecting and if you can't get a statement from them, how is this case even going to survive? I believe that child testimonies in abuse cases are credible because they're the ones who are dealing with the abuse, they're the ones going through the pain, their testimonies will help them receive the justice they deserve.

I Want to Write About #86. Write about seeing the ocean or mountains.

The last time I saw the ocean was this past summer. I went to St. Petersburg, Florida with my family. The sun was beating down on all of us as we made our way to the ocean. I saw seagulls passing by waving there long wings. The water was crystal clear and the sun was sparkling on it. I could see the sand beneath the water and the waves rolled in making their calming noise. The sand under my toes was warm and soft, It was like walking on a cloud. Riding the wave runner only made the beach ten times better. As I pressed the gas the warm, thick as brushed against me. I rode miles out with my brother on the one next to me, we saw fishes  flop out of the water and the dolphins go under the jet ski and jump out after coming up. The fins appearing right next to us made us want to jump in. The beach is always a calming place, a place to clear your mind of all your worries and be stress free. I wish I was there right now so hear the waves crashing, people laughing and the wave runners zooming across the opened ocean. The last time I was by the ocean I didn't have one thing on my mind. What I would do to see the ocean again.

J for Jamaica

Jamaica

If I someday I would like to travel to Jamaica I would mostly like to go to YS falls because it has beautiful waterfalls, Blue hole mineral spring because it's a great "water resort." I don't really like to play golf but my family does, so I would want to check out White witch Golf club along with Hooves because I love horses and this is a "guided horseback riding adventure." My favorite thing to do on vacations is see nice water and breath taking views. Therefore I would want to visit White river because its a pretty "body of water" along with H'Evans Scent because I read about how it has amazing "hills with great views." One last thing I would love to do is go on the Rainforest Bobsled because its an adventure for the entire family. Jamaica seems like such an amazing place, I would go in a heartbeat.

A best friend is like a four leaf clover, Hard to find and lucky to have

A best friend is like a four leaf clover, Hard to find and lucky to have

I really like this proverb because it relates to my life and I believe that you have to be lucky to have friends and never take them for granted. I picked this proverb because I have heard a lot of people saying it, including my mom and this is one of the only sentences that I truly believe in. I have two best friends and I didn't just meet them one day and decide to be friends, it took time. It takes time to trust someone and find the same interests in order to connect with that person. I think this proverb means that the good people in your life will come to you, it may take a a very long time but they will eventually come. Friends like I said before, shouldn't be taken for granted, you have to be lucky and happy to have met them and really cherish your time with them.

TU tuesday 10/26

http://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Coaches-ranking-motivator-for-Danes-2218125.php

I chose this article for my TU TUESDAY because I really like learning about other basketballs teams and see if I can relate to any other there issues. In my article there was many key words and phrases that impacted the who moral of the article.
1)One word that was important to the whole article was the word: prevail. Which means to prove more powerful than opposing forces. The word prevail effected the story because it really made the sentence interesting to read. The sentence was "But, to be honest with you, once the ball goes up, the best team is going to prevail." I think this was a great way to close the article because it shows that the basketball team at UALBANY still believes in themselves and thats the moral of the article.
2)Another great phrase was when the head coach said "There are a lot of teams that have good players returning." This doesnt really need to be defined because it just means that every team in the conference has a lot of good players coming back and the UALBANY might have some competion. This phrase had an impact on this article because it just shows that the team at UALBANY still does believe in themselves but they can't get too confident or else that might effect how the overall team plays. The impact on this article was to show that a lot of teams have great returning players but UALBANY should believe in themselves and try to have some fun this year.
3) The third word/ phrase is "Brown said that Puk and Devlin are both mending nicely from nagging injuries from a year ago. Puk had an issue with an Achilles' tendon, and Devlin underwent back surgery in the offseason." The thing that most people don't understand is how huge an injury can and will impact a player. I injury can ruin a players career forever. The effect this phrase has on this whole message is that injuries can take awhile to heal and that Puk and Devlin might not be able to start, this can effect the whole UALBANY team for quiet sometime and it might be hard for them to recover. The impact that injuries have on a team is you can lose some of your best players. Your health can't be taken for granited and you should always be thankful you have the opportunity to play basketball.
4) The forth word/phrase is the word: win. Win means to gain victory. The word win effects the whole article because it's talking about how in order to succeed in this game your team has to put the top points on the score board. If you lost you feel defeated and I certainly know thats the feeling you hate the most. The word win impacts the whole article because to win is something you really like to enjoy and because the UALBANY team doesn't have that many supporters if feels good to be the "underdog" team and to win you games just goes to show everybody that you can and will succeed.
5) The final word/phrase is "The kids are going to be pissed," Brown said when he found out the poll's results. "When they see that they are picked fourth, they are going to think they are better than that." This is the most important sentence throughout the whole article because it basically says the the Great Danes-aren't great anymore. This phrase effects the whole article because when the Great Danes were picked forth they felt discouraged and felt like giving up, but the peoples critisim just pushed UALBANY harder than ever. This sentenced impacted the article the greatest because it overall explains how the Great Danes' season usually starts. UALBANY's article taught me that if you try your hardest you can always succeed no matter who tells you, you can't.

Childrens Book

I remember reading this book with my mom and dad when I was younger. This book was one of my favorites to read because I got so excited when the little bird actually found it's mother. I can remember being little and when my mom and I sat next to eachother on her bed and started to read this book. I knew the book from cover to cover memorized -thats how much I liked it. Still to this day whenever I read this book I get a happy feeling inside because I grew up with this book. Of course this is one of me and my brother's favorite books. I think it even still might make my mom and dad happy to read this great book.

Extra Credit

I=Indiana University Northwest

http://www.iun.edu/
Reasons I would go to this school:

1. The week of Ocotber 17th is Criminal Justice week and thats what I want to major
2. They have a Law major and I really want to be a Lawyer
3. They have an internship program and I think that would be something I'd be interested in
4. They have a Women's basketball team. I love to play basketball and I could possibly get a scholarship.
5. They have a big population of students which I really like. I think meeting new people could be so much fun & I would really enjoy it

Reasons I wouldn't want to go to this school:

1. Its in Indiana and I live in Albany, NY. The traveling time is way too much.
2. $38,060 a year. Plus traveling back and forth by plane for holidays would really add up at the end of each year. It would be a lot of money.
3. Since they have such a wide vairety of students, making the basketball team seems almost impossible, which makes me really nervous.

Wright Brothers Unpowered Test Flight

This picture is worth a thousand words to me because it shows you how our society has grown today. If you look at this picture from awhile ago it shows when the Wright brothers were just starting to create the airplane and now in today's world we couldn't live without an airplane. I also think this picture is worth a thousand words because I think it symbolizes how hard working people were in that society in that time period and now in our communities we use their creations so much. So we wouldn't kow what an airplane was if it was not for the Wright brothers.

The Body by Stephen King

"The most important things are the hardest things to say."
Words can hurt, does the truth hurt?
How can I tell you, without hurting you?
I want to protect you,
I want to help you.
Will you react to what I expect?
Its important, its hard, it needs to be said.
Your my friend,
you need me & I need you.
Its hard for me to admit, It needs to be said face to face.
"The most important things are the hardest things to say."

TU Tuesday BLOG

http://blog.timesunion.com/bethany/happy-to-be-here/653/

In the article I read for TU Tuesday, is about a women by the name of Bethany Parks. Bethany is a survivor of Breast Cancer and talks about "pink ribbon month." Bethany goes on to explain how she doesn't like how emphasized this particular cancer is. Saying "I don’t love the commercialism, the ads, the hype, the play on people’s sympathy, the daily reminder about breast cancer – as if the scars aren’t enough" meaning this month is very dear to her heart but the constant reminder that she had cancer is painful. As much as she doesn't like October she enjoys how everyone comes together and cherish their moments with eachother saying "I love the girlfriends being together, the families honoring loved ones who are no longer around." Bethany also says she loves the spirit that everyone brings. Bethany is two years cancer free and loves living her life to the fullest.

TU Tuesdays

http://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Milestone-for-Moore-1022126.php

"Milestone for Moore"
In the article I read on the timesunion website was about the girls Siena basketball team. This past Sunday, Serena Moore scored her 1,000th point in her career in Siena Basketball."Serena Moore scored her 1,000th point to help the Siena women's basketball team to a 57-40 win against Saint Peter's on Saturday in Jersey City, N.J." Moore is a senior Foward on the team. Moore is one of five other Siena players to complete this goal of scoring 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and blocking 100 shots. Serena is the 24th player to have scored 1,000 in program history. Serena Moore ended the game with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks- one impressive game.

1. How did Moore feel after getting her 1,000 point?
2. Why does she like the game of basketball?
3. Does she enjoy Siena's coaching staff?
4. How long as Moore played basketball & how does it affect her life?
5. Does Moore want to continue on with basketballl after college & if yes, how so?

Opinion Prompt 7 - Everyone should have access to healthcare services.

I agree with this because suppose your really poor and all of the sudden get cancer, then what do you do? Are you just suppose to let it kill you? Are you suppose to suffer? I think that everyone should have access to healthcare services because we all need help and if you can't afford it then I think it should be free to you. I understand doctors need to get paid and it costs a lot of money but chances are doctors are pretty well off and can help either someone dying or an elder person to get better for free. In society today everyone always just thinks of money and theres more to life then just that. You can't buy happiness, but someone out there needs help and you can certainly make them happy by helping them. I think as a country if you need healthcare services you should be able to have them.

The art blog.

I picked this picture because I know a little bit about the Assumption of Mary. My mom grew up in a very catholic family. She has always taught me about my religion which I appreciate. This picture is one of the mysteries of our religion. We believe Mary as a person went to heaven. We as humans, only our souls go to heaven. Life is full of many mysteries and sometime during the day I can't quite understand why certain things happen. I just have to accept them like my beliefs.

Fortune Cookie "It's a good time to finish up old tasks"

I'm the type of person that needs a little push in order to accomplish something. It’s not whether you want to do it, its a matter of if you do it you will feel more confident as a person. In my life I have had many situations that I have put things off and said I would do it later. My friends Michelle and Gabby have taught me, you only have one chance and before you know it, the chance will be gone. I have already learned that because its my current situation.  I'm going to make the first step to feel better about myself. I believe that my fortune "It's a good time to finish up old tasks" means that, even though time has passed and things you don't want to remember come back to you, it's never too late to turn around.

But words are just words

But words are just words
Until you mean what you say

But words are just words
Does it make you feel stronger?

But words are just words
You know you can hurt people

But words are just words
It was just a mistake

But words are just words
Can you take it all back?

But words are just words
Until you hear someone's pain

But words are just words
Don't give it away

But words are just words
And can hurt more than actions

But words are just words
Would you throw it all away?

But words are just words
It's okay to feel emotion

But words are just words
Be careful what you wish for

But words are just words
Until what they say becomes what you think

But words are just words
Until its too late

But words are just words
Until you wish to take back what you said

But words are just words
Until you mean what you say

But words are just words
Until you say what you mean
